La crèche Sainte-Marie, une oeuvre du Second Empire

Institution charitable ou instrument de paix sociale ? Telle est la question qu’on peut poser en analysant les objectifs et le fonctionnement de cette crèche, une des premières à fonctionner en France. Dédiée aux jeunes enfants des femmes travailleuses pauvres dans une ville ouvrière, elle vient effectivement en aide aux familles, mais elle s’intègre aussi dans tout un système d’encadrement de la vie sociale des classes laborieuses. Elle illustre le bonapartisme social et humanitaire.

>Was it just a charitable institution, or more than that, an instrument of social peace offering education and support to the working women of Rochefort ? Surely it was one of the first nursing homes in France devoted to the care of the babies of working mothers in this industrial town. it also fitted in the structures of a broad social framework intended to support and supervise the lives of working women.
